Lavender

Post by Johara »

I have just seeded some lavender and according to what I have read "Lavender seeds have what can be considered a low and slow germination rate". Has anyone here tried growing them? Please share yourexperience. Thanks

I have no previous experience of lavender, I also sowed some seeds today, but what I have read about lavender that: they are not only slow and low germinators but also tricky. After sowing first provide 4oC temperature for 3 weeks, then transfer to 21oC for 2 weeks in light. I have sowed my seeds on wet tissue paper inclosed in zip locked plastic bag and placed this bags in refrigerator, after 3 weeks I will transfer this bag to outdoor temperature in bag for two weeks. If some germination occur then I will shift the seedling to the ground or pot. Waiting for good results.

Thanks Mirafzal. Last year I placed seeds on paper towel and in plastic bag, not in fridge, but nothing germinated. I was talking to some friends from the South of France and they suggested Isow directly in the ground as the climate there is similar to Karachi. Keeping my fingers crossed and will keep you updated of results, if any.

Great to see lavender from seed. I guess both of you are germinating the spanish/french lavender not english one?

I am also due to get some lavender seeds from a gardening friend from france. Do keep us updated on the germination. After all this is one of most aromatic plants we are going to have in our gardens :D

I have sowed them in the paper cups and placed in plastic bag and I have 50% germination rate after 3 weeks without refrigeration.

I am planning to germinate lavender from seeds bought from Abdul Seeds Store at Empress Market, Karachi. Please update the thread with the outcome of your experiments. Any helpful tips would be appreciated.

I sowed 20 seeds few weeks ago and 2 germinated so far. Local packet and was cheap. Will sow remaining ones soon. No special treatment given.
